JOB CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time; Exempt; Non-Union
PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Financial/Administrative Officer (CFO/CAO) is responsible for ensuring that finance, operations, IT, and HR functions of the organization are advancing the vision and strategy, as set forth by the CEO. The CFO/CAO is responsible for the planning, implementation, and maintenance of an organization-wide operating budget of $10-11MM annually.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key areas of direct oversight include:
  • Finance, budgeting, and financial reporting, including revenue and expense monitoring;
  • Compliance and reporting for purposes of all applicable statutes and regulations, grants, and contracts; and governance; and
  • Human Resources, employee and labor relations, and facilities management.
The CFO/CAO also supports direct CEO oversight of the following critical organizational functions:
  • Development and implementation of organizational strategy; and
  • Development and fundraising.
The CFO/CAO’s direct supervisory relationships include:
  • Senior Vice President of Finance;
  • Director of I.T. ; and
  • Human Resources Manager
ADDITIONAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
  • The CFO/CAO is the primary person leading the day-to-day operations of the organization. The CFO/CAO is responsible for overseeing all financial, compliance, planning, monitoring, personnel, and other operational activities of the organization.
  • The CFO/CAO collaborates with the CEO to plan and develop organizational objectives and is responsible for implementing, measuring, and refining plans to achieve those objectives across the organization.
  • The CFO/CAO collaborates with the CEO and the executive management team to develop and implement the systems, processes, and personnel to meet the organization’s objectives.
  • The CFO/CAO oversees the process for developing the annual organizational budget and monitoring fundraising and spending to ensure compliance with the budget adopted by the Board and support for the organization’s annual and long-term goals.
  • The CFO/CAO works with the executive team and others to develop, maintain, and present key data about the organization’s performance for the CEO, the Board, funders and other stake holders, and the organization, as a whole.
  • The CFO/CAO is responsible for other duties as requested by the CEO and/or based on organizational need.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
  • Undergraduate degree; advanced degree in a relevant field preferred and at least 10 years’ experience managing internal operations and at least 5 years’ experience supervising senior management
  • Previous involvement in strategic planning, preferably in an advocacy organization; ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into the organizational plan
  • Thorough understanding of strategic planning, business operations, business analysis, systems, IT platforms and emerging technologies, human resources and financial management
  • A successful track record of building, motivating and mentoring high-performing teams across functional areas, including senior-level professionals, and connecting with staff both on an individual level and in large groups
  • Experience in an organization with collective bargaining units; demonstrated experience working with representatives of collective bargaining units
  • Proven ability to:
  • Make timely decisions to ensure smooth operation of the organization
  • Develop and implement plans expeditiously to advance stated mission, goals and objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate trends and future consequences and incorporate them into financial and operational plans
  • A results-driven orientation with a proven track record of setting and exceeding goals
  • High ethical standards and sound judgement
  • Exceptional communications, writing, speaking and presentation skills. Ability to make effective presentations to varied audiences including executive management team, staff, and the Board.
  • Strong conflict management, resolution, and negotiation skills
  • Ability to travel at least 30%, primarily between the New York and Washington DC offices
