The Curatorial Associate will play a key role in supporting the curatorial and administrative work required to grow and refine Fidelity’s Art Collection, a 12,000+ object contemporary art collection located in over 240 locations. The role helps to complete curatorial projects and the acquisitions process, and collaborates closely with galleries and artists. They conduct art education programs and help foster connections between the art and associates, visitors, and customers. With opportunity for growth and advancement, this role requires self-direction, proactivity, curiosity, and a collaborative spirit. This position sits in Boston with days offsite and occasional after-hours time during installations. New England and greater domestic travel is required.

Curatorial Support

  • Assist and support curators to help expand the collection in across regional sites and investor centers, acquiring new art, and rotating existing artwork provide a dynamic work environment for employees, associates, and clients.
  • Help supervise installations of new or existing artwork, in new, renovated, or existing spaces.
  • Assist in researching, sourcing, and acquiring contemporary art for the Art Collection. Write extended labels as needed.
  • Curate special projects as assigned.
  • Actively scout for art, stay informed of regional art talent in the areas of interest, as well as the wider art world, and keep pace with contemporary art practices, trends, and market.
  • Attend art fairs, museum exhibitions, and galleries as needed, independently, or on behalf of curators. Make studio visits with independent artists to maintain a strong network and broad exposure to current artworks.

Administrative Support

  • Support senior curators administratively by following up with galleries and artists for Collection acquisitions.
  • Create worksheets for art moves, populate the database, and assist with projects as needed.
  • Run the invoice processing and copyright letters for all acquisitions on a weekly basis, including vendor set up in and account management in Ariba. Track payments, coordinate with registrarial team and monitor progress.
  • Schedule and run weekly acquisitions meetings, keeping track of visuals, notes, decisions, and acquisitions budget, follow up as needed.
  • Assist senior curators and registrarial team to prioritize and manage weekly framing and object care meetings onsite.

Support Art Collection Programming

  • Work with the Education and Outreach Manager to curate and develop Spotlight exhibitions and programming centered on the Art Collection.
  • Research artworks and artists in coordination with the education manager, in support of the collection and Art Ambassador training program.
  • Give lectures and tours, host programs and workshops as needed to support the Art Group Programming.
  • Work with education manager and curators to collaborate with business units to develop programs that parallel and expand upon cultural and social issues also being addressed by the company.

The Curatorial Associate will report to one of the senior curators but will operate independently day-to-day to complete tasks. They will conduct art research, rotation plans, curation, education programs, and special projects. Decisions about collecting policies, as well as larger acquisitions and projects, will be done in collaboration with the entire Curatorial team and with the final approval of the VP, Head of Fidelity Art Collection.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in Art or Art History and minimum five years experience working in contemporary art/design/art history
  • Experience acquiring or curating contemporary artwork and working within the art market (art gallery, museum, artist studio, exhibition planning, art buying/selling, or cultural institution background)

Skills/Knowledge

  • Knowledge of and passion for contemporary art and art industry
  • Established network, or ability to build a network, of contemporary artists and galleries
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including a comfort level giving formal presentations and speaking extemporaneously about contemporary art
  • Must be able to successfully manage multiple project-focused duties and ensure the accurate and timely completion of the tasks
  • Must communicate professionally at all times, with tact and diplomacy, to represent Fidelity appropriately. Must demonstrate interpersonal awareness, recognizing impact on others and adapting to be effective in different situations.
  • Must be comfortable in a fluid and adaptable business environment, and able to absorb and apply new information and demonstrate flexibility in adapting to change.
  • Self-starter with strong sense of ownership, accountability and involvement is critical. Demonstration of initiative, commitment, and strong work ethic.
  • Possess ability to effectively prioritize work through personal knowledge and communication with others to set expectations
  • Must work collaboratively including the ability to interact with all levels of employees including senior level management
  • Must maintain discretion and confidentiality
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and PowerPoint) and Adobe suite, Art database familiarity, proficiency with design applications preferred
