Job Title: Environmental Justice Director
Core Purpose: Oversight and continued development of the Environmental Justice
program and staffing team.
Term of Employment: Full time, exempt (40 hours/week, includes Friday
wellness time, see “Benefits” for more information).
Compensation: Negotiable based on experience.
Location: Fairbanks or Anchorage preferred; Remote possible- Fairbanks or
Anchorage, Alaska offices. Travel is expected

Environmental Justice Program Summary
This program endeavors to protect the rights of Mother Earth, the rights of Indigenous ways of life, and the rights of all beings to healthy waters, and lands in Alaska. This program works to build statewide advocacy and voice on key environmental justice issues that center the rights of Indigenous peoples and the rights of Mother Earth. Additionally, the program strives to identify and support grassroots organizing on key issues that aim to build broad and politically aligned bases. Furthermore, this program works to advance regenerative economies and healing justice through cultural revitalization and Indigenous ceremony as an effective and key strategy for protecting Mother Earth and our future generations. Native Movement centers collective power building as the means by which lasting impact can be made to protect cultural and food sovereignty and the rights of Mother Earth, the animals, plants, waters, air, and all her living beings.
EJ Director Position Summary/Job Description
This position supports the Native Movement Environmental Justice team in carrying out the EJ program goals and objectives (summary above). This position provides supervisory support to EJ staff and ensures the team is working in a strategic, collaborative, healthy, and goal-oriented way. This position works closely with the Executive Director, the Climate Justice team, the Communications team, the Native Movement Directors team, and local community organizing groups/entities who are addressing environmental injustices.
Primary Responsibilities
- Team supervision and development
Hire, train and supervise a team of community organizers, coordinators, and/or leads to achieve program goals.
Identify and facilitate opportunities for growth, coalition building and development for the Environmental Justice team.
Direct team roles and responsibilities in order to meet program goals and objectives.
Ensure that the EJ team follows administrative needs for program success.
- Program Oversight
Oversee, collaboratively develop and manage the Environmental Justice program.
Stay up to date with issues impacting individuals or communities across Alaska to inform EJ program campaigns and strategies.
Identify collaboratively key issues and strategic advancement on issues.
Collaborate with the NM Communications Team to develop program campaigns and strategies based on community needs and aligned with Native Movement’s mission.
Coordinate with the NM Community Education team to support base-building efforts that further environmental justice reach and engagement.
Build and maintain EJ related partnerships and relationships with community groups and organizations.
Connect and collaborate with other NM Action and Advocacy programs, in particular with the Climate Justice program due to large overlapping potential.
- Program Management
Develop annual program budget and communicate regularly with the NM Finance Team to assess and adjust budget as needed.
Serve as the account signatory for the Environmental Justice Program
Follow all financial reporting policies and procedures for expenses
Review EJ related grant narratives – articulated strategies and proposed outcomes – as well as grant deliverables and reporting.
Foster collaborations and engagement with Native Movement advisors and leadership in order to continue to grow, adapt, and develop program goals and benchmarks with new or changing times.
- Organizational Leadership
Serve as a member of the NM Directors team, who participate in collective decision making for the organization.
Participate in organizational strategic planning and align program goals and objectives to the overall strategic plan

Qualifications
At least 4 years of experience working on environmental justice issues, including grassroots organizing, coalition building, and program development and management.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous ways of life and culture, and a commitment to centering Indigenous voices and perspectives in environmental justice work.
Strong leadership and supervisory skills, including the ability to hire, train, and manage a team of community organizers and coordinators.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build and maintain partnerships with community groups and organizations, and work effectively with colleagues across different teams and departments.
Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and manage program budgets, track and report on grant deliverables
Familiarity with Alaska-specific environmental justice issues and a commitment to working with communities across the state to advance regenerative economies and healing justice.
A commitment to the mission of the Native Movement and a willingness to participate in organizational strategic planning and decision-making processes.
Willingness to travel within Alaska, including to remote communities, as needed to support program goals and objectives.
Experience working with or alongside Indigenous communities in Alaska or other parts of the world is strongly preferred.
