Job description
Provides supervision and leadership for the operation of the Med/Surg Unit.Completes staff evaluations. Provides 24-hour schedules for the Med/Surg Unit staff and works in the department as necessary. Annually reviews/revises departmental scope of services and policies. Demonstrates effective job initiative, departmental planning, and quality leadership. Performs physician and nursing CQI functions and works as a liaison between physicians and nursing. Assures continuing individualized, age-specific patient and family health care including educa¬tion. Supports and follows hospital safety and health rules, personally intervenes in the leadership, behavior and training of staff in regards to safety and health policies and practices. Reviews specific safety and health expectations for and with departmental staff. Evaluation will reflect accountability for the performance of these safety and health expectations.

Achieves the mission and objectives of the hospital in accordance with approved policies and procedures by ensuring appropriate planning, organizing, directing, and controlling all activities of the department. Oversees and develops polices and procedures for the efficient functioning of hospital operations.

Prepares agendas (completes minutes and sends notices) and presents information at various meetings including Nursing Supervisor, Department managers, QI, quarterly medical staff, Infection Control, departmental staff meetings and other meetings as requested. Completes appropriate statistics and assists with peer review.

Assess and develops staff in-services according to identified needs. Attends meetings, workshops, reads journals, etc. to further develop professional and management skills. Implements orientation for new staff members.

Identifies problems and creates solutions for operational and clinical issues both interdepartmentally and hospital wide. Maintains collegial relationships with other department managers and physicians; accepts and responds to constructive criticism. Supports administration and medical staff.

Leads , guides, trains and directs the Nursing Supervisors. Holds monthly meetings and ensures effective communication among all of the Nursing Supervisors.

Develops annual goals and monitors progress towards completion. Is a role model for departmental staff in clinical and professional interactions. Sets department tone for staff by example

Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient’s age specific needs and provide age specific treatment and care. Works in departments as necessary to provide direct patient care.
BLS required upon hire and maintained throughout employment. A graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Must be licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Michigan. BSN preferred, or comparable experience. ACLS and PALS certifications required within 90 days of employment and maintained throughout employment. Must have minimum of two (2) Med/Surg experience. Management experience preferred.
