The Natural Garden designs and installs living landscapes in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont. We work primarily with native plants to feed the pollinators and the greater food web, adding edible, herbal, and medicinal plants to nourish both human and wild inhabitants. Old-world stonework is incorporated into our ecological landscape design to visually anchor the garden with timeless beauty. With over 25 years experience, The Natural Garden is the Shenandoah Valley’s source for creating outdoor living spaces and restoring streams, meadows, and woodlands using biodiversity and conservation practices.

The Natural Garden is seeking a Native Plant Horticulturalist/Specialist to consult on landscape and habitat restoration design projects, order plants for installation projects, and work with planting and maintenance crews to edit landscape planting design projects as they develop over the years. This individual plays a crucial role in bringing the design “off the page” and into living reality for The Natural Garden customers. A person with a passion for native plants, an ability to blend creativity and practical application, and a strong desire to collaborate with other hardworking team members would be a great addition to our company.
Primary Responsibilities
- Show up with a positive and uplifting work ethic and collaborates well with team members.
- Native Plant Landscapes:
- Create Native Plant Planting plans for our Native Plant Landscape Designs
- Advise and work in a hands-on way with the Landscape Maintenance Teams to edit the already growing Native Plant Landscape
- Habitat Restoration Projects:
- Create Native Plant Plant Communities for our Native Plant Habitat Restoration Design
- Advise and work in a hands-on way with the Habitat Restoration Maintenance Teams to edit the already growing Native Plant Habitat Restoration Projects.
- Order Plants and Seeds for Projects
- Locating project plants and seeds from The Natural Garden nursery and from other native plant and native seed providers
- Tracking deliveries
- Develop an “Increasing Levels of Biodiversity and Stability in Native Plant Community” projects
- Refine and further develop plant communities for all ecoregions The Natural Garden works within
- Develop and give talks for the local community
Required Experience and Knowledge
- Mid-level to expert-level experience and knowledge with the native plants of the Shenandoah Valley and the Piedmont of Virginia or the Mid-Atlantic Region as a minimum.
- Proven record of working and collaborating well with landscape and habitat restoration professionals to create native plant designs and habitat restoration plans.
- Able to work outdoors for extended periods of time in a wide range of weather.
Desired Experience, Knowledge, and Interest
- Education background including an Associates or Bachelor’s degree in native plant botany/horticulture is preferred, but not required.
- Strong desire to actively promote native biodiversity through habitat restoration on the landscape and habitat restoration scale.
Experience or interest in providing native plant education to general public and those interested in learning more about Biodiversity and Native Plant Community projects
Compensation and Benefits
- Starting pay $15 per hour, depending on experience.
