JOB TITLE:
Post Doctoral Research Associate-Agricultural & Applied Economics

JOB PURPOSE:
Postdoctoral Associates are temporary fixed term Faculty dedicated to the pursuit of greater professional expertise after the attainment of the doctoral degree. This category recognizes that doctoral recipients in some disciplines may require intensive advanced work in a particular discipline before seeking permanent employment. Postdoctoral Associates are not eligible for extended-term appointments. It is characteristic of Postdoctoral Associates to work with a small set of faculty mentors who are responsible for directing the employee’s research and training. The temporary nature of internships, the precariousness of grant funding, and the desire of many Postdoctoral Associates to acquire permanent employment early in their careers call for a specific set of governing regulations for this category of employee.

The Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics at the University of Wyoming has a fully funded, immediate opening for a motivated and enthusiastic postdoctoral research associate.

This post-doc will join an interdisciplinary team of researchers and MS students examining the responses of agricultural and municipal water users in the Wyoming portion of the Colorado River Basin to changes in water availability.

The successful candidate will work independently and with other team members to build a water supply model that reflects water user decision-making given uncertainty around future water availability and policies governing Colorado River water allocation. Models of individual water use in agriculture (ranch-level optimization) and urban settings (econometric) will inform regional supply and computable general equilibrium models. The post-doc will have the opportunity collaborate with any of these efforts.

Position funding is for one year. There is currently significant energy and activity around collaborative, interdisciplinary, and stakeholder-informed research related to water resources and climate change at the University of Wyoming. Potential thus exists for the successful candidate to extend work on the same project beyond the initial year; and to contribute to other, related research efforts focused on community adaptation to climate change and changes in water availability.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Kristi Hansen and other faculty collaborators.

The salary is competitive and includes a comprehensive benefits package. The anticipated start date is June 30, 2023 but is negotiable. Position could either be on the main UW campus in Laramie or remote; if remote, occasional travel to Laramie and other sites within Wyoming will be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Construction of an economic, regional water supply model for the Wyoming portion of the Colorado River Basin
  • Manuscript preparation and grant proposal development
  • Presentation of results in group meetings
  • Dissemination of project outcomes via publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentation of results at scientific conferences
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Co-mentoring of/coordination with graduate students working on the project
  • Participation in community meetings with user groups
REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:
This position is eligible for remote work and/or a flexible work schedule.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A doctoral degree in Agricultural Economics or a related field is required for this position; however, consideration will be given to applicants that are currently pursuing their Doctoral degree and will complete the degree prior to starting work.
  • Expertise in economic modeling (economic optimization/simulation, computable general equilibrium models, or similar)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Previous interdisciplinary and
/or

collaborative work

  • Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) that is compliant with the
University Vehicle Use Policy

.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Record of publishing in peer-reviewed literature
  • Experience interacting with stakeholders and/or incorporating stakeholder input into model development
  • Familiarity with the optimization software program General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS)

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
