Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree with at least six years of experience, including four years of imaging experience; or bachelor’s degree and eight years of experience
  • The years of experience requirement above should include at least 2 years of prior experience in a research setting. This does not need to be academic.
  • In good ethical and professional standing sufficient to participate as an investigator on Federally funded research studies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral-level degree.
  • Prior experience developing, leading, and/or publishing research.
  • Prior experience in developing funding proposals for scientific or clinical studies, particularly proposals to the National Institutes of Health.
  • Prior experience in independently developing regulatory documents.

The University Imaging Center (UIC) in the University of Minnesota Department of Neuroscience is seeking a Research Support Manager 2 - to coordinate the daily research operations of the UIC. This position assures the operational efficiency of research by maintaining the proper equipment, overseeing data collection and analysis, and maintaining the operational budget. This job requires the ability to solve complex research problems through the design of new protocols, procedures, and policies aimed at achieving diverse research aims. This position is an essential component of the research team and is instrumental to the success of the research project. This position is responsible for ensuring safety standards are maintained, and for ensuring that the UIC follows all regulatory requirements. We can train on all of the job functions below and will then expect you to be able to work independently with guidance and oversight from the UIC Program Director in special cases only.

The salary range for this role is $95,000 – $105,000 annually, depending on qualifications. You can read more about our excellent benefit plans below.

Job Responsibilities/Duties:

Administrative (25%):

  • Provide strategic direction for UIC research operations, including staffing, physical resources, and fiscal responsibility for research projects and initiatives.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations ensuring that the center is in compliance with regulations and University policies.
  • Develop policies and procedures to ensure observance of best research practices, federal regulations, and University policies.
  • Identify and define deliverables and associated timelines for research projects, initiatives, and requests for proposals.
  • Oversees the personnel management and training of all UIC research staff.
  • Advises the UIC Program Director on capital purchases.
  • Oversees financial and facility usage reporting and conducts analysis to make recommendations for short term and long-term planning. This includes monitoring and tracking equipment usage for billing, budgeting and planning purposes.
  • External Sales contract negotiation with an emphasis on agreements that require discussions with OGC related to confidentiality agreements, specimen handling policies as well as safety protocols (for both user and specimens) depending on the nature of the work. Clarifying and policing policies surrounding SPA related agreements involving collaboration between UMN PIs and Industry.


Research Support (40%):

  • Provide scientific and technical guidance to University researchers on all imaging matters in the UIC.
  • Train and guide University researchers in the best use of the UIC hardware and software applications.
  • Train University researchers and UIC imaging specialists in the usage of the advanced instrumentation (live cell, single and two photon confocal, super-resolution, intravital imaging, in vivo imaging, ultrasound etc.) at the UIC and the analysis of their data.
  • Provides significant contributions toward obtaining internal and external funding opportunities.
  • Maintain essential instruments as part of related funded Centers and Programs.
  • Study and review the scientific and trade literature to identify new imaging technologies of potential use to researchers and advise the UIC Program Director on future resource allocations.
  • Advise researchers in their selection, development and implementation of imaging and analysis pipelines that fulfill their scientific goals.
  • Conduct experiments for researchers and assist them in the processing and analysis of their results.


Policy Compliance (15%):

  • Responsible for all aspects of imaging work in the UIC including equipment QC monitoring, , data integrity, and regulatory compliance.
  • Testing and verification of instrument performance.
  • Coordination with staff and vendors to ensure proper maintenance of UIC instrumentation.
  • Development of standard operating procedures and user guides.
  • Assist the Program Director in administrative and compliance activities.


Teaching and Training (20%):

  • This position requires training and teaching a large numbers of university employees. Experience in teaching (both lecturing and individualized instruction) and in an academic environment is a requirement for this position.
  • Lecture preparation and teaching in at least 3 classes annually in graduate and undergraduate classes. These classes are within the Medical School, College of Biological Sciences and College of Science and Engineering.
  • Preparation of sample materials for teaching labs
  • Train, supervise, and coach the imaging scientists in the UIC, with emphasis on professional growth and career development.
  • Organize scientific meetings, workshops, symposiums and conferences.
  • Attend specialized workshops and classes to stay abreast of new technology and advise researchers on their potential benefit to the work being done at the University of Minnesota.


The University Imaging Center (UIC) offers equipment and support for light and electron microscopy, spatialomics, tissue clearing, in-vivo imaging from subcellular to whole animals, image analysis & visualization, sample preparation, slide scanning, and large format poster printing.
