Boulder County Parks and Open Space (BCPOS) department is seeking to hire 4 Seasonal Wildlife Technicians to assist with prairie dog management on open space lands, primarily on Agricultural crop-production properties. These seasonal positions are funded for 24 weeks.

This is a hourly, non-benefited position. This position will work Monday - Friday 6:00am - 2:30pm. This position will work out of the BCPOS Headquarters located at 5201 St. Vrain Rd., Longmont, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, this position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime).

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $20.04 Hourly

Tentative Hiring Timeline:


  • Phone Screening: April 4th
  • First Round Interviews: April 6th
  • Reference Check: April 10th

Examples of Duties

  • Removal of prairie dogs from undesirable locations using live trapping methods and euthanization on-site with carbon dioxide machines
  • Assessment of prairie dog colonies on properties
  • Site surveying for burrowing owl occupancy
  • Some prairie dogs will be humanely dispatched for use in predator (black-footed ferret and raptor) recovery programs
  • May assist in placement of visual barriers and other deterrents
  • May assist with research projects by non-BCPOS entities
  • Performs related duties as required
  • May be reassigned in emergency situations

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Boulder County is looking for well qualified candidates to fill our positions. Any combination of relevant education and experience is encouraged. In this position, we are looking for a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.

DRIVER'S LICENSE:

  • Applicants must have a valid driver's license
PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL:
  • Candidates for this position will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical

Supplemental Information

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum two years of college course work in Wildlife Biology, Resource Management, Ecology, Zoology, Biology, Agriculture, or related experience
  • Previous fieldwork with mammals, especially prairie dog experience is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work well under stressful outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to work well with others (7-person crew).
