Hosted within the UN Foundation in Washington, DIAL is a partnership among some of the world’s biggest digital development champions, including Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
The Communications team at DIAL is in charge of designing and delivering strategic communications activities in support of advancing the organization’s objectives, mission, and work - including brand building, targeted marketing activities, content development, and media outreach. The Senior Associate, Advocacy and Influence, supports the Communications team to develop and implement communications activities to advance our policy, advocacy and influence objectives.
This position is located in Washington, DC or remote (global).
Essential Functions
- Responsible for working closely with the Senior Manager of Communications, DIAL leadership, communications firms, and relevant colleagues to create targeted communication and media strategies designed to connect with and engage DIAL’s key advocacy audiences
- Conducts regular and ad hoc desk research to inform our communication activities, including key audience preferences and behaviors, media trends and topics of interest, and content and engagement trends
- Works with DIAL’s media agency on media outreach and engagement on policy, advocacy, and influence positioning, with support from Communications team leadership
- Assists select DIAL teams and programs to deliver effective communications activities, including key messaging, brand presence, website content, publications delivery, and leveraging digital channels for amplification and engagement
- Works with select external agencies and consultants to project manage storytelling initiatives, visual content development, and campaigns with support from Communications leadership.
- Supports DIAL’s advocacy initiatives, including but not limited to the DPG Charter, the Digital Principles, and other Communities of Practice.
- Responsible for coordinating with DIAL’s Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning function to report against communications KPIs, provide insights, and make performance improvement recommendations
- Supports effective collaboration and coordination with UNF communications colleagues, in particular the Public Affairs team
- Responsible for utilizing UN Foundation’s agreement process and systems appropriately, maintaining an understanding of all agreement terms and applicable flow-downs, consulting with the UN Foundation’s finance/contracts team as needed
- Other duties as assigned
Selection Criteria
- Bachelors’ degree or relevant work experience in communications, marketing and / or journalism and media
- 3-5 years professional experience in influence-focused communication roles, preferably to advance global advocacy and policy objectives
- Interested in the UN, international affairs, and / or digital transformation and emerging technologies
- Strong understanding of, and experience in, designing and leading communications strategies, including audience research, community and digital engagement, action-oriented content, and performance analytics
- Experience with managing websites and designing creative materials welcomed
- Growth mindset and values continuously learning
- Dynamic, proactive, and just as comfortable working collaboratively as independently, including collaborating in matrix approaches with multiple small, fast-paced teams working with complex technical concepts
- Creative, with strong attention to detail and results oriented
- Competent writer and an avid communicator who follows media and communication trends.
- Able to work under pressure and handle stress
- Keen to work and grow in a diverse, international environment with a global team
