Perform responsible work reading water and electric consumption meters to create bills for customer accounts.

Essential Job Functions
  • Walk or drive assigned routes to read water and electricity consumption meters at various locations.

  • Locate and uncover meters as necessary; use keys to enter private property if needed.

  • Read consumption by recording meter numbers into handheld computers.

  • Inspect meters and connections for any defects, irregularities, malfunctions, tampering, and/or unauthorized connections. Report meter defects, hazards, or related findings to proper authority by completing required work orders for service or customer service notices.

  • Resolve and/or refer public inquiries and complaints.

Ancillary Job Functions
  • May clean meter reading vehicles or area.

  • Restructure routes as needed to read meters in sequence.

  • Assist in rereading meters to check accuracy of earlier readings.

  • Safeguard keys used for entering private property.

  • Assist Utility Service Workers on heavy work days.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities which may be representative, but not all-inclusive of those commonly associated with this position
  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Knowledge of Columbia city streets to be able to plan routes sequencing.

  • Ability to read, record, and accurately enter water and electric meter readings from distances of 3 to 10 feet away.

  • Ability to understand and communicate policies, procedures, and services of the department, referring customers to other sources as needed.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public.

  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.

  • Ability to learn operation of handheld computers and meters.

Work Environment – Environmental or atmospheric conditions commonly associated with the performance of the functions of this job
  • May be required to work in confined spaces or hazardous traffic conditions.

  • May be exposed to wet/humid conditions, inclement outdoor weather, extreme temperatures, or moving mechanical parts.

  • Must be able to walk for extended periods of time, up to 15 miles per day.

  • Frequently required to talk and listen when interacting with customers and coworkers.

  • Must be able to feel attributes of objects, grasp, push, stand, drive, reach with hands/arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb/balance, operate mechanical equipment, and move up and down from/to sitting position on the floor.

  • Regularly required to have repetitive wrist, hand, and/or finger movement.

  • Must have clarity of vision and precise hand-eye coordination.

  • May be required to lift up to 45 pounds.

  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
